Chinese Chess — Red vs Black

Your turn

Goal. Checkmate your opponent's General — leave them no legal move that escapes check.

Board. 9 columns × 10 rows. Pieces sit on the intersections. A river crosses the middle. Each side has a 3×3 Palace (marked with an X).

Pieces.

KKing (General). Moves 1 step orthogonally. Must stay in its Palace. Two Generals cannot face each other on the same file with no pieces between ("flying general" rule). AAdvisor. Moves 1 step diagonally. Must stay in the Palace. EElephant. Moves exactly 2 steps diagonally. Cannot cross the river, and is blocked if the midpoint is occupied. HHorse. Moves 1 orthogonal then 1 diagonal outward (L-shape). Blocked if the adjacent orthogonal square is occupied. RRook (Chariot). Moves any distance in a straight line, until it captures or is blocked. CCannon. Moves like a Rook. To capture, it must jump exactly one piece (the "screen") of any color along a straight line. PPawn (Soldier). Moves 1 step forward before crossing the river. After crossing, it may also move sideways. Never moves backward.

How to play. You play Red and move first. Click one of your pieces to see its legal moves — blue dots are moves, red rings are captures. Click again to move. Your king flashes red when in check.
