You play White and move first. Tap a piece to select it, then tap a highlighted square to move.

Pieces: Pawns move forward one square (two from their starting rank) and capture diagonally. Knights jump in an L. Bishops slide diagonally. Rooks slide along ranks and files. The Queen moves like a rook and bishop combined. The King moves one square in any direction.

Check and checkmate: You must respond to check by moving the king, blocking, or capturing the attacker. If there is no legal response, it's checkmate and the game is over.

Castling: When the king and a rook haven't moved and the path is clear and safe, tap the king and tap two squares toward the rook to castle.

Promotion: Pawns that reach the far rank automatically become queens.
